The holidays are a time for connection, but let’s be real—some questions can accidentally push our teens away instead of drawing them closer. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Why to avoid these specific questions?
(1) “How is school?” is a very general question that doesn’t give space for the youth to really reflect and think deeply about the year thus far.
(2) “Do you have a girl/boyfriend?” can make teens feel uncomfortable or judged if they aren’t in a relationship or if they’re unsure of their personal identity as it pertains to dating.
(3) “What are your plans after high school?” can result in feelings of uncertainty about the future and may amplify anxiety.
(4) “Why are you always on your phone?” is dismissive in this technology driven age. Tech is a major part of many people’s lives and many teens find safety in their devices.
(5) “Why don’t you talk to/hang out with…?” may place teens in a situation where they feel forced to explain personal decisions they may not be ready to share.

💡 Hint: The key is to be curious, not critical. Let’s make this holiday season a safe, judgment-free space for them to feel comfortable and welcomed for who they are and not who we expect them to be.

Clients are holding so much — grieving the loss of loved ones, depression rooted in familial trauma, anxiety triggered by unhealthy social engagement, and for some of my teens, being home for a week is absolute torture.
